A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed Monday afternoon in a residential neighborhood in West Homestead.

Police were called to the 900 block of Sarah Street at about 2:30 p.m. on a report of shots fired, said West Homestead Chief Christopher Deasy.

When officers arrived, they found the boy face down on the ground, with an apparent gunshot wound to the back.

The teen was taken to UPMC Mercy, where he was pronounced dead at 4:22 p.m., according to the Allegheny County medical examiner's office.

West Homestead police have turned the investigation over to the Allegheny County police homicide unit.

According to Chief Deasy, a person was taken into custody at the scene, but he was unsure if any charges had been filed.

County investigators did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Chief Deasy estimated that about 15 shots were fired at the scene, although he was unsure how many weapons were involved.

"It concerns me greatly," Chief Deasy said. "Within 45 minutes, I was going to have kids walking down that street from school."

He called it "a brazen act by people who just don't care."

"Where do we go as a society when this stuff is commonplace?" he asked. "It makes no sense to me."

Monday's shooting came a week after another attempted break-in resulted in suspects firing two shots through a person's front door, the chief said. No one was injured in that incident.
