TINICUM — A Chester man was arrested on his way to school Monday for allegedly carrying a handgun in his backpack.

Isaac Santiago, 19, is charged with weapons violations and related offenses in connection with the incident that took place at 8 a.m. Police were dispatched to the rear of a shuttered bank off of Route 291 for a report of suspicious individuals. Santiago, who resides in the 200 block of East 24th Street in Chester, and another man were allegedly loitering behind the building. The responding officer conducted a pedestrian stop during which Santiago said he was on his way to Allstate Career School, located about two blocks away in Essington.

When Santiago’s backpack was searched, the officer found the handgun. Santiago, who police said does not have a license to carry, allegedly told the officer he forgot to take the weapon from his backpack as he headed to school.

Bail information was not immediately available.
