State police in Uniontown are seeking an explanation of how a 21-year-old Dunbar woman sitting on the bank of the Youghiogheny River was shot in her thigh and forearm Wednesday night.
Fayette County Crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that may lead to an arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the 6:45 p.m. shooting of Kelly Lynn Brooks of Dunbar.
Brooks was sitting with a group of friends on a rock in an area of South Connellsville known as South Connellsville Beach when she was struck by the bullet, according to Trooper Alec J. Hamilton.
Trooper Stefani A. Plume, public information officer at the Uniontown station, said the bullet pierced her left thigh, appeared to pass through and then hit her left forearm.
Brooks was treated at Highlands Hospital in Connellsville and then flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian for treatment of non-life-threathening injuries. She could not be reached for comment yesterday.
"That's a remote area with woods all around it. It could have been someone shooting in the woods, and she could have been accidentally shot. ... We don't know and want to find out," Plume said.
Despite the reward, Plume said police had received few tips by late yesterday afternoon.
"We're hoping someone does come forward with some valuable information. Like I said, maybe it was an accident," Plume said.
She said the shot came from an unknown direction and police are not sure whether it came from a handgun or a rifle.
"We are asking if anyone has any information on the shooter or the circumstances surrounding the shooting to please contact Fayette County Crimestoppers at 1-888-404-TIPS ," Plume said.
Tips can also be relayed via email at crimestoppersfayette@gmail.com.
