An Ohio man brandishing a shotgun threatened firefighters responding to a fire in North Beaver in Lawrence County, then shot himself when police arrived Sunday afternoon, state police said.
North Beaver Township firefighters were responding to a residential fire in the 200 block of New Road when they were confronted outside the burning house by Ronald Covert, 53, of Negley, Ohio, state police said. Covert was wielding a shotgun and refused to let the firefighters approach the house, police said.
When state troopers arrived and ordered him to drop the weapon, Covert shot himself, police said. He was declared dead at the scene. The fire marshal's office is investigating the fire.
