York City Police detectives were hoping to interview a city man shot in the chest early Wednesday morning as he recovered from surgery, according to a police official.
Police said that Thomas Washington III was shot once in the lower chest in the 600 block of East Philadelphia Street.
But as for who shot him and why - those questions remain unanswered, York City Police Lt. Tim Utley said.
After he was taken to York Hospital, Washington underwent surgery, Utley said. Later Wednesday morning, he was listed there as a no-information patient, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Utley said that just before 2:30 a.m., officers were called to the 600 block of East Philadelphia Street after the shots were fired.
"Our guys were already in the area, at the intersection of Sherman and (East) Market," he said. "They heard the shots being fired, a good city block away. They went into the area, found some shell casings."
A group of people who were with Washington placed him in a vehicle before an ambulance could arrive, Utley said.
"They threw this guy in a vehicle, took him to Memorial, then once he was stabilized, he was taken to York Hospital," he said.
Speaking with those who were with Washington proved fruitless, Utley said.
"The officers talked with those who were at the scene; of course, nobody knows anything," he said. "Nobody admitted to being a witness ... They heard the shots, they saw this guy stagger and fall," but nothing before that.
