A Canton Township man is accused of firing a handgun from the second floor of his home into the first floor after assaulting his mother and her boyfriend during a confrontation Monday night.

Matthew Clayton Fargo, 25, of 300 Laddie Drive, was taken into custody by state police following a brief foot chase.

Police were called to the home about 7:30 p.m. for a reported dispute. Fargo is accused of slapping his 59-year-old mother, Ann Fargo, during an argument.

Fargo then got into an argument with Henry DeLong. He threw two chairs at DeLong, hitting the 71-year-old man both times, police said. Fargo then kicked DeLong in the groin, punched him in the back several times and threatened him, police said.

Fargo then retrieved two handguns and a rifle from a second-floor bedroom. He reportedly fired one of the handguns through the floor into the first-floor area occupied by his mother and DeLong.

During his arraignment, Fargo told District Judge Jay Weller the gun fell and accidentally discharged.

Fargo was taken to Washington Hospital for treatment of a laceration on his arm, police said. Neither his mother nor DeLong sought treatment Monday night.

Fargo was arraigned before Weller on two counts of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment and one count each of terroristic threats, simple assault, criminal mischief and harassment. He was placed in the Washington County jail on $25,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Monday before District Judge David Mark.
