A 5-year-old city girl underwent emergency surgery Thursday at Hershey Medical Center after her 7-year-old brother shot her in the forehead with a BB gun on Wednesday, according to police.

Family members took the girl to the emergency department of Lancaster General Hospital after she was shot in the kitchen of their home in the first block of Dauphin Street. Hospital officials notified police.

The girl was treated at the hospital's trauma center before she was flown to Hershey.

Police said the BB penetrated the girl's skull and brain, causing a "very serious" head injury. She was listed in critical condition on Thursday.

Police said there were several adults in the home at the time of the shooting.

Detectives recovered the BB gun, which police said was a pump-action air rifle capable of firing a BB at 680 feet per second.

Police said no charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.

Police urged owners of BB guns and pellet guns to treat them like other firearms because they are capable of causing serious injury or death.

Lt. Jarrad P. Berkihiser said people should not become "complacent just because" it is a BB or pellet gun.
