CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.— Pennsylvania State Police troopers fatally shot a man Saturday morning in Franklin County after he pointed a handgun toward them, police said Saturday afternoon.

The 27-year-old man was not immediately identified by police, who said he died as a result of shots fired by troopers.

The four male troopers involved in the incident outside a Bony Lane residence in St. Thomas Township also were not identified.

The names of those involved were being withheld pending required notifications and the investigation, police said.

State police at the Chambersburg barrack received a report of a suspicious person at 7:55 a.m. The man was described as white, approximately 6 feet 1 inch tall and in his mid 20s, according to police.

While on their way to the residence, police were told that the suspicious person had attempted to enter the caller’s residence and that the individual was armed with a handgun, police said.

Upon arriving at the residence, troopers found the suspect inside a pickup truck parked at a nearby residence, police said.

“The suspect displayed a handgun toward troopers and was subsequently fired upon by the troopers,” police wrote in a news release.

State Police Sgt. Anthony Manetta said Saturday afternoon that troopers involved in this type of incident are typically placed on administrative duties pending completion of the investigation.

Joining police in the investigation are the Franklin County Coroner’s Office and the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office. Trooper Jeremy Matas is the investigating officer, police said.
