A Beechview man shot his mother five times before killing himself, though the woman is expected to survive her injuries, Pittsburgh police said.

Henry Sunder, 55, told 911 dispatchers about 12:35 a.m. Tuesday that he shot his mother and would wait for police to arrive to kill him, police said. The dispatcher heard another shot.

At the Broadway Avenue home, police found Sunder dead on the front porch from a gunshot in the head. They found his mother, Elizabeth Sunder, 73, with bullet wounds in her eye, shoulder and torso.

Paramedics took her to UPMC Mercy, police said.

Police said Henry Sunder shot his mother with a revolver and himself with a shotgun.

Investigators are working to determine whether a work-related issue prompted Sunder’s attack. Mt. Lebanon School District spokeswoman Cissy Bowman said the district terminated Sunder from his custodial position on May 7.

Neighbors said family members rarely came outside.

“You would say ‘Hi’ when you walk by, if they’re out,” said Peggy Sunder, 50, whose family believes they might be distantly related. She said her daughter thought someone was breaking into their car when she heard the gunshot.

Sean Connors, 45, watched police officers approach the house with guns drawn.

“It was unbelievable. It still doesn’t seem like it’s true,” Connors said.
