SW PHILADELPHIA: SEPTA worker fatally shot

A 52-year old SEPTA trolley operator was shot and killed Thursday morning after leaving his house in Southwest Philadelphia to go to work, officials said.

Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives said Aaron Hayes was shot in the head, neck, and one arm just before 5 a.m. outside his home on the 7100 block of Elmwood Avenue in the Eastwick section, police said.

He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition. He was pronounced dead about 9 p.m.

SEPTA said the victim has worked for the agency for 27 years.

Walker described the gunman as a white male, 5 feet, 5 inches to 5 feet, 9 inches tall who was wearing dark clothing and escaped in a dark colored Mitsubishi car driven by a white woman.

Investigators are seeking a motive.
