A 21-year-old man was killed, and a second man was wounded in a shooting in York City Thursday afternoon.

The shooting happened in broad daylight in the 200 block of West Princess Street about 4:20 p.m. and involved two groups of people, according to York City Police.

Killed was Kyle Westry, 21, of South Queen Street, said York County Deputy Coroner Steve Cosey.

Westry was taken by ambulance to York Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:48 p.m., nearly half an hour after the shooting occurred, Cosey said.

Westry suffered three gunshot wounds, one of which was in his abdomen, said Sgt. Rich Barth of York City Police.

An autopsy is planned for Friday, Cosey said.

The second person, a 20-year-old man, was injured in the shooting and was taken to York Hospital in a private car. He was treated for a minor wound and released, Barth said.

No arrests had been made in the shooting as of Thursday night.

'Struggling': A number of police officers arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting was reported.

There they found Westry lying in front of the Agricultural and Industrial Museum.

"He was struggling for his life," Barth said.

A crowd of about 50 people gathered near the scene to see what was happening but quickly dispersed once an ambulance arrived.

Wesley Woodward of Seven Valleys was in the area and walked down to see what happened after he heard gunshots.

He said he saw the shooting victim and called 911, telling a dispatcher there was a "boy lying on the sidewalk dying."

"It breaks my heart," Woodward said. "That kid couldn't have been more that 18 or 19."

Assault: About two hours after the shooting, as police investigated the scene, a man was injured when another man picked him up and slammed him onto the sidewalk on South Pershing Avenue, about a hundred feet from the homicide scene.

As the injured man was lying on the sidewalk, the man who caused the injury got into a car and fled. An officer gave chase in a police cruiser, and radio transmissions indicated the car was stopped about a block away.

The injured man was treated by a fire police officer until an ambulance arrived.

Police did not say if that incident was related to the shooting.

Investigation: Police investigating the shooting found five shell casings in the William Penn High School parking lot at the corner of West Princess Street and South Pershing Avenue.

A car, a red Hyundai Elantra, was found abandon with its engine running in the parking lot and was towed from the scene by police.

A number of cars parked in the 200 block of West Princess Street had bullet holes in them.

Several people were taken to the police station for questioning, Barth said.

But police believe additional witnesses are out there.

Police are asking for anyone with information about the shooting to contact police at 846-1234.
