A long-simmering feud between two Montgomery County residents led to the Tuesday night shooting death of an Abington man.
William Butler, 27, was shot in the back as he ran from his armed enemy about 9:30 p.m. on the unit block of North Hills Avenue in the North Hills section of Abington Township, said District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman.
Witnesses told police there had been an ongoing dispute between Butler and Andre Dula, 22, of nearby Glenside.
Dula, witnesses told police, had threatened to shoot Butler on previous occasions. On Tuesday night, an eruption between the two turned fatal. Witnesses said Dula pulled a handgun as Butler ran away. Dula, they said, chased Butler while firing three times in his direction.
Butler, hit by a bullet as he fled, fell to the ground. He was taken by a neighbor to Abington Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:58 p.m.
An autopsy performed Wednesday determined that Butler died of a gunshot wound to the back, Ferman said.
Dula, charged with murder and firearms offenses, is being held without bail pending a July 25 hearing.
