A New Kensington boy apparently shot himself Tuesday morning at his aunt's home in Arnold.

Four-year-old Anthony Alexander is at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. Hospital officials declined to release his condition at the request of the boy's family.

Alexander, who lives on Cherry Alley in New Kensington, shot himself in the left eye shortly after 10 a.m. The shooting occurred at the home of his aunt, Yvette Alexander, at 2015 Kenneth Avenue.

At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Arnold Police Chief William Weber said one of the boy's parents, Shelly Alexander, had dropped off Anthony and his six-year-old brother at the home earlier in the morning. The aunt is the children's regular babysitter, he said.

After the shooting, Anthony was taken to the Citizens Ambulatory Care Center in New Kensington, then transferred to Children's.

Weber said he had been told by doctors that Anthony had undergone surgery and was expected to live.

Police obtained a search warrant for the house shortly after 2 p.m., but the reason for getting the warrant and the results were not immediately available. Weber said police have not recovered the weapon, believed to be a small-caliber handgun.

A neighbor, Jeremy Fisher, said he saw police cars outside of the house this morning, but did not hear a gunshot. He said he frequently sees young people hanging out on the house's porch, but there's never been any trouble there.
