A California man faces charges after several shots were fired early Sunday in Washington’s West End.

Nathaniel Marshman, 20, of 1249 California Terrace, was charged Monday in connection with the incident reported about 3:10 a.m. in the 600 block of Broad Street.

Police were called for a report of 10 to 12 shots being fired. When they pulled up, two men were running from the area across Hoge Street.

Officer Matthew Karlowsky started chasing the two on foot but lost one of them. He continued to run after the other, later identified as Marshman. The officer ordered Marshman to stop. The California man ignored the order and continued to run, climbing over a fence in a yard in the 600 block of Fayette Street.

Marshman then ran into a yard at 668 Fayette from which there was no exit. Marshman reportedly took a fighting stance toward Karlowsky, closing his fist and approaching the officer. Karlowsky was able to take him to the ground as the two struggled.

Officer Kent Mitchell broke his hand trying to climb a fence to assist Karlowsky, police said.

Marshman was taken to the police station and later released. After daylight, police were able to find a KelTec 9 mm handgun in a fence at 635 Fayette. The gun, which had been reported stolen in January 2010, had six rounds in it.

Charges of carrying a firearm without a license, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct were filed against Marshman at the office of District Judge Robert Redlinger. A hearing will be scheduled later.
