Allentown Morning Call | By Frank Warner
A 19-year-old Allentown man was shot to death in his apartment Tuesday afternoon, police said. Neighbors said they heard about a half-dozen shots.
Anthony A. Otero of 905 Chew St. was pronounced dead at the scene by Lehigh County Deputy Coroner Craig Hanzl about a half-hour after the 4:55 p.m. shooting. Hanzl also ruled the death a homicide, the city's 10th of the year.
Allentown police would not say whether they have a suspect, but they planned to investigate throughout the night. Officers in latex gloves collected evidence on the first and second floors of Otero's apartment building.
A woman and four children were led away in the rain from the apartment house shortly after the shooting. Neighbors said they believed the woman was the victim's girlfriend.
Deputy Coroner Eric Minnich said an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday.
Allentown police and District Attorney Jim Martin's Homicide Task Force are investigating the death.
For their inquiry, police shut down a half block of Chew Street west of Ninth Street. Two police investigative vans and the county emergency Command Post vehicle were parked on the street.
Richard Remaly of the 300 block of N. Ninth Street said the shots were so loud he thought the shooting was outside.
"I live in the back and I still heard it," he said. "I heard six gunshots. Later, I came out here and I saw all these cops.
"It's getting out of hand," Remaly said. "Look, they have a surveillance camera at the intersection. That didn't stop anyone."
