For the past several years, family members said, Roy Tarboro told them many times about armed intruders trying to break into his east Allentown home.
The family dismissed the stories as part of the elderly man's ongoing battle with dementia. His son, Rickey Tarboro Sr., who lived on the first floor of the home, assured his father that he was safe and had nothing to fear.
But on Monday evening, 86-year-old Roy Tarboro apparently believed someone was trying to get into his upstairs apartment at 712 E. Allen St. and fired his gun several times, hitting and killing his son, said Sharol Kistler, Rickey Tarboro's girlfriend.
Kistler said she believes the elder Tarboro mistook his 54-year-old son for an intruder when he went to his apartment to check on him after hearing gunshots.
"He took a part of my life away last night," a sobbing Kistler said Tuesday. "I'm so angry at him right now."
