Fix The Broken Background Check System
The shooting in Tucson, Arizona exposed flaws in America’s efforts to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, drug abusers, the adjudicated mentally ill, and other prohibited individuals. Gaps in the national background check system mean that potentially dangerous people can slip through undetected and purchase firearms – despite a record that legally prohibits them from doing so.
The laws defining who may legally buy firearms were established more than forty years ago, but Pennsylvania is still one of ten states that have not submitted a single mental health record to the national database. More than 500,000 files are missing from our state alone – leaving Pennsylvanians and all Americans at risk.
Sign below to send Governor Corbett and the State Police a message that Pennsylvanians want our state to take responsibility for itself and share those records with the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
Dear Governor Corbett and Commissioner Noonan,
As a resident of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I urge you to bring Pennsylvania into full compliance with the National Criminal Background Check System. We've seen what happens when dangerous people slip through the cracks because information wasn't reported, and we don't want to see bloodshed in Pennsylvania because we simply didn't share the data.
Thank you,
