Senators Pat Toomey (R-PA) and Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) proposal for moderate gun violence prevention lacked the necessary votes to pass the Senate earlier this month, yet, as the Bloomberg View wrote yesterday, “Their proposal didn’t die.” The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives found that half of federally licensed gun dealers are not “in full compliance with the law.” Coupled with this staggering finding is growing support from gun violence prevention groups, including Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Americans for Responsible Solutions. The fight against a small and extreme anti-gun-safety minority is not over, but by “strengthening law enforcement, research and political resources, supporters of gun safety can begin to alter what has long been a losing dynamic.” This is the time.
