Our great friend and partner Christine Licata of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America has a strong op-ed on Penn Live, calling for expanded background checks.  She reminds readers that 90 percent of people in the U.S. support background checks on all guns sales.  This includes 82 percent of gun owners and 74 percent of NRA members.  Furthermore, background checks are quick and easy; they take about 90 seconds to complete.  Most importantly, however, is that they are extremely effective in preventing prohibited purchasers, such as convicted criminals, domestic abusers, and mentally ill people from purchasing firearms.

The Brady background check has been extremely effective: since its initiation in 1993, the system has blocked over 2.2 million prohibited purchasers from buying a gun.  However, as Licata explains, there currently exists a  loophole, which allows for private sellers in PA to sell long guns without a background check.

That is why Christine Licata in her PennLive Op-ed announces her pledge to only votes for candidates in November that are committed to gun sense laws and closing the loophole.  She urges readers to do the same.  In honor of Jim Brady and his life-long battle for the enactment of gun safety laws, she asks readers to cast their votes for only those candidates who are committed to making Pennsylvania safer.
