Police Chief Mark Kessler, 41, has become notorious for his offensive YouTube videos in which he exhibits violent behavior and extremist political ideals. As the only member of the Gilberton Borough Police Department, the residents of Schuylkill County have much reason to worry. Still, the town of Gilberton has continued to support Kessler, a member of the school board, as he publicly threatens to “shoot a libtard out of a tree.”

The videos began with Kessler shooting at a clown target he named after current U.S. House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. “We’re gonna give two to Nancy, then we’re gonna put two in her face,” he says before firing angrily into the effigy. In a subsequent video, Kessler initially pretends to apologize for his hurtful language, but then continues his profanity-filled tirade against his opposition. He continues to attack liberals on his official Facebook fan page with the offensive term, “libtards.”

Technically, Kessler has the constitutional right to threateningly fire his M-16 on video while spouting his fanatical, anti-government rhetoric. Gilberton’s mayor issued an official statement to those who have demanded Kessler’s removal from the police force: “As you may already know, the Borough of Gilberton supports the U.S. Constitution, as well as the Pennsylvania Constitution, and therefore has made no law which would impede its employees’ First Amendment rights. Anyone asking the borough to take action against the chief, when he has committed no illegal act, no violation of policy and no misuse of borough time, is asking that we establish an official political view of the borough and impose it upon one or more of our employees, which would obviously be unconstitutional.” The erratic paranoia and anger that Kessler exhibits through social media outlets such as YouTube and Facebook call into question whether he is competent to serve a position that requires both tolerance and objectivity.
