In a letter to the editor, Christine Licata, Pennsylvania chair of Moms Demand Action’s Pennsylvania chapter, calls on state lawmakers to ensure that adults will be held responsible if their negligence results in a child being shot. Jamara Stevens was shot by her two-year-old brother, who had picked up a gun and started playing with it. Her death was entirely preventable.
“Right now, more than 1.5 million children live in households where their firearms are stored unlocked and loaded,” she said.
Gun injuries and deaths resulting from an unsecured firearm, or the negligent handling of one, must be considered more than just an accident.
