The Mighty Power of a Mother’s Heart
As we celebrate Mother’s Day 2014, we also honor our many hard won freedoms. It is a proud reminder of how hard our moms, grandmoms and great-grandmoms fought to secure the vote for us. It is a proud reminder of the power we possess as women.
Gun violence has become an undeniable health crisis, producing horrendous stress in our communities, our families and our children. There were more than 1300 gun-related deaths in Pennsylvania in the past year – that’s about one every seven hours. PA ranks among the worst states in terms of gun-related deaths of children. No child – -no one — in the United States of America should have to live in fear of gun violence.
All year long, CeaseFirePA has been working with us to amplify the voices of mothers and whole communities with a relentless determination to end gun violence. I support and believe in this work, and I hope you do too.
We own the power to change things.
We can and must refuse to vote for those who put our lives on the line in order to protect their own political positions. We must look “wrong” in the eye and “right” it. We must demonstrate that the myth of the gun lobby is nothing when compared to the outrage of mothers.
To honor ourselves this Mother’s Day — and all those who came before us, let’s send a strong message that we are demanding change from our leaders, and if they don’t hear us, we will make clear that they are no longer fit to lead us.
Election day is May 20 – let’s be sure to vote with an informed strength of mind and wisdom of heart. You can view the CeaseFire Pennsylvania Report on the 2014 Candidates at here.
There isn’t a bouquet of flowers big enough to thank you for taking a stand against gun violence with the power of your vote.
Please join our rally at Love Park, Philadelphia on Saturday, May 10, at 11am. Come…remember, rejoice and recommit to saving communities across our Commonwealth.
You have our deepest gratitude and best wishes for a magical Mother’s Day,
