The CeaseFirePA Leadership Institute is a comprehensive training and education program designed to enhance the skills, knowledge and confidence of new and experienced gun violence prevention activists.
The success of the gun violence prevention movement in Pennsylvania and nationwide hinges on an effective, grassroots network of advocates and organizers fighting for common sense gun policy. The CeaseFirePA Leadership Institute is a leadership development program designed to build the capacity of these community leaders and enhance their work. The core of the program is a curriculum of workshops with a modular structure that can match the needs of a variety of audiences. The curriculum employs a popular education approach, using interaction and participants’ experiences and knowledge to stimulate learning and covers topics that are relevant to participants of all levels of fluency and experience with gun violence prevention.
The curriculum focuses on three areas: Knowledge, Analysis and Skills. Knowledge explores the current legislative and policy context for gun violence prevention in Pennsylvania and nationally. Analysis allows participants to operationalize their knowledge of gun violence prevention by combining it with their individual lived experiences and perspectives. Skills introduces participants to best practices and give them a chance to practice their grassroots organizing skills. The intent is that the program can be used a la carte to address specific goals or as a comprehensive training platform to give participants a well-rounded base for their grassroots work.
The Leadership Institute currently offers nine separate workshops — three sessions in each of the core areas of Knowledge, Analysis and Skills. A brochure describing the sessions is available here.
