Harrisburg, PA – On Monday, September 22, 2025, at 11:00 AM in Room 140 of the Main Capitol, the Pennsylvania House Judiciary Committee voted on a suite of bills designed to address the full scope of gun violence across the Commonwealth. The legislation includes bans on machine-gun converters, as well as strengthening background checks and establishing Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs).
“Pennsylvania families deserve to live without untraceable firearms slipping through detectors, machine pistols spraying bullets in their neighborhoods, or someone in crisis turning a gun on themselves or others. Today is the first step towards a safer Pennsylvania,” said Adam Garber, Executive Director of CeaseFirePA.
The PA House Judiciary Committee voted to advance the following gun safety bills:
- Extreme Risk Protection Orders (HB1859, O’Mara) would temporarily remove firearms from those who intend to hurt themselves or others.
- Ban on Machine Gun Converters (HB1866, Steele) would stop the spread of small devices that convert handguns into automatic fire machine guns, such as one used in the attack that killed Police Chief McIntyre.
- Close Loopholes in Background Checks (HB1593, Warren) would require a background check before the private sale of a long gun such as an assault rifle.
- Ban on Undetectable Firearms (HB1099, Cephas) would ban the manufacturing, sale, and possession of undetectable firearms, including 3D-printed firearms.
Additionally, Designate Domestic Violence Awareness Month (HR279, Delozier) was also advanced by the House Judiciary Committee.
A date for the vote on the floor of the PA House has yet to be announced.
